Usually, yes. In Boston, a bathroom renovation generally needs a short-form permit when no structural changes are needed, or a long-form permit when structural walls or egresses move, for example when the bathroom is enlarged, a window is added, or a doorway is created or removed. Other towns set their own rules, so we confirm what your address requires before work starts.

Not in Massachusetts. Residential plumbing must be done by a state-licensed master or journeyman plumber under a permit from the local plumbing inspector. A permit is not required for minor repairs such as fixing a leaky faucet or clearing a blocked drain, but replacing or relocating a faucet, valve, fixture or piping is not a minor repair. On our projects, plumbing is done by licensed tradespeople we partner with.

Massachusetts plumber licenses can be looked up with the state’s “Check an Occupational Board license” search on Mass.gov. Ask your contractor who the licensed plumber on your job will be, then check the license there.
